Reading:
This week we focused on how asking and answering questions while we read helps us to better understand what we are reading. When students realize that they don’t know the answers to their own questions it’s time to go back and reread that section to find the answer. We also discussed the setting and plot in a story. Next week we will dive into character traits.
Writing:
This past week in writing we discussed what our new Writer’s Workshop will look like. Students were asked to bring in pictures to decorate their writing composition books. These pictures could be of them or of things that they love. Feel free to send in pictures next week too if your child wants to add to their book. Next week we will begin to dive into what it means to write a personal narrative.
Math:
This week we really discussed place value and rounding. We worked on rounding to tens and hundreds. We will continue into next week before moving onto addition and subtraction. We will have our first quiz on Thursday the 27th on rounding and place value. . We stressed the importance of the first few weeks building on the rest of the year!! We are so proud of their progress! Towards the end of the week we will be putting all we have learned into solving word problems.
Science:
Our first science unit will be on Georgia's habitats. This unit will last about 4 weeks with a test tentatively scheduled for the week of Sept. 7. Students will be introduced and expected to know the 5 major regions of GA: Mountains, Piedmont, Swamps & Marshes, Coastal Plain, and Ocean. They must also be able to identify species of plants and animals that live in those regions and certain adaptations that allow those plants and animals to thrive there. This week we learned about the Swamp and Marsh and Oceans habitats. Next week, we will discuss the Coastal Plain region and Mountain region.
