Reading:
Next week we will continue to look at nonfiction texts. The kids did great this week picking out the main idea and details. Next week we will focus on cause and effect.
Writing:
Next week we will continue to work on narrative writing. We are continuing to focus on using a storyteller voice, adding dialogue, and when to have a new paragraph.
Math:
Don’t forget that our first math test on Unit 1 is Wednesday, September 23rd (we pushed it back one day). Please note that their study guide is their interactive notebook. We are not sending home traditional study guides like you may have seen in the past. So the best way to be studying is to be using their books to see what we are learning in class. Students will need to be able to do the following on their math test:
· Round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred
o Example:
§ Round 74 to the nearest ten
§ Round 329 to the nearest hundred
· Solve word problems involving rounding
o Example:
§ Jane collected 78 stickers over the weekend and 321 stickers during the week. To the nearest ten, about how many stickers did she collect?
· Add and subtract numbers through the thousands involving regrouping and borrowing
o Example:
§ 345 + 487
§ 904 – 643
· Check their answers using the inverse operation
o Example:
§ 345 + 487 = 832; to check using the inverse operation, students should do 832-487 and get 345 as their answer
· Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction through the thousands (including multi-step word problems)
o Example:
§ Three hundred, forty-seven people went to a football game on Friday. One hundred, seventy-two MORE people went to a football game on Saturday. How many people went to the football game on BOTH days?
· Students would need to do two steps to solve this problem. Step 1—add 347 + 172 in order to find out how many people went on Saturday. Step 2—add 347 to the sum of the answer in Step 1.
· Interpret pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots
· Measure objects to the nearest ½ inch and ¼ inch
Social Studies: We finished science last week and this week started our 1st social studies unit. We talked about the major rivers in the U.S. this week. We also talked about how Greece influenced our own government. We have been putting everything in our interactive notebooks so please be reviewing that with your kiddo at home often. Next week we will be getting into democracy and the parts of government.
Interactive Notebooks:
We have a notebook for every subject that students are adding material to on a daily basis. Students process new ideas that are presented to them while teachers provide new information either whole group or during station rotations in small groups. All INBs are used differently from teacher to teacher, but they all generally have teacher generated notes (discussion notes, outlines, handouts with new information, sample problems, foldables, etc.), student generated notes and ideas, practice problems, essays, anchor charts, sentence starters, etc.
The purpose of the INBs (interactive notebooks) is to allow students to take full ownership of their learning. It also allows students to use various learning styles to process information. By having students write down the information that they are gathering, they are better able to recall the information when needed.
Traditional study guides that are pages long with practice questions that mirror the test will no longer be given as a study tool. All of the information that students will need to know for a test will be in these notebooks. The notebooks can go home any (and every) night as long as they are returned to school the next day since we use them daily. While the majority of notes and items added to these notebooks are done with teacher guidance, students are still responsible for making sure that they have the correct information copied down and that all materials provided are included in the notebooks. As the year progresses, teacher assistance with adding information is slowly pulled away from students so that they can grow to become more independent learners.
Often times, we will use a model called the “flipped classroom” where students will take their notebooks home, and for homework, prep for the next day’s lesson. This may be done by watching a Learn Zillion video and taking notes for their INBs or cutting and gluing the material so that classroom time can be used strictly for instructional purposes. We will often have pictures of what the pages should look like posted to our blogs, too, for student and parent reference. Please do not fill in the pages as we will do this together in class.
If you have any questions about the INBs, please let me know as I am happy to help!
