Thank you so much to the parents who attended Curriculum night last night! For those others, we missed you! The power point we went over will be on the third grade website in the coming days, along with the handbook. We needed the last page signed and returned by Wednesday the 24th.
Please remember to send in your $20 donation to PTA. We use it in so many ways throughout the year and it includes the grade level t-shirt. Money is due Friday the 11th.
Our 1st field trip to the Consolidated Mine is on October 7th. Permission slips will go home on Tuesday.
Student Council forms are due back no later than Wednesday the 9th at 2:30. No late forms will be accepted.
Remember to sign up for Teacher-Parent Conferences using the sign up genius link that was sent out earlier this week. Please let me know if none of the offered times work for you and we can work out a schedule.
Please check out our awesome PTA website http://www.nppta.ch2v.com/index.asp?PageID=0 There is TONS of good information located on their site.
Reading
Next week we will be finishing up our first unit. We will have a test focusing on setting, plot, and character traits on Thursday, September 10. Students will use their Reading Comprehension Books to study. There is a packet in your child’s Reading Notebook labeled “The Adventures of the Three Students” This is not a study guide BUT an example of what the reading passage will look like and the types of questions that will be asked. Please do not try to memorize the answers as the students will have a different reading passage for their test.
Writing
We will be continuing our focus on personal narrative writing. Next week will be used as a review for what we have already covered. The students seem to really enjoy our new writing curriculum.
Math
We reviewed addition and subtraction. Regrouping is an important skill that the kiddos need to be experts at. Next week we are going to take those skills and apply it to word problems. Towards the end of the week, we will be learning how to read a ruler and measure to the nearest half and quarter inch. We will end the unit with reviewing bar and pictographs. We will also be discussing how to read a line plot. We have bumped our test back to September 23rd. Please know we are always looking out for our kids. We felt that they needed the extra days of practice. Some units we will end quicker than others, but we are always doing what is best for them!
Science
We are wrapping up our habitats unit. Our test is scheduled for Friday September 11th. Their study materials are all in their interactive notebooks. They have a booklet on each habitat and we filled out a flip chart that included other facts that they will need to study for the test.
Q and A from Curriculum Night
Q: How can kids enroll for Math & Science Olympiad?
A: Information will come home when it is time to sign-up for these programs. If you visit the NPES website and look at the drop-down menu under the ‘Activities’ tab, you can read more about the programs.
Q: Can a student attend just one out of the two extended learning days?
A: If a student was recommended for only math or only reading, then s/he will only attend the one day that the subject is covered. (This only applies to students who received a letter about being enrolled in this after school program.)
Q: Do we need to sign the agenda daily?
A: No. Information about agendas can be found in the Third Grade Handbook on pgs.4-5
Q: Do you need graded quizzes signed by parents and returned?
A: If an assignment needs to be signed and returned, there will be a note on it indicating to do so. This usually only applies to major assessments. However, there may be extenuating circumstances where a quiz or classwork assignment may need to also be signed and returned. If this happens, you will be notified about what to do.
Q: What is ITBS testing?
A: The ITBS stands for Iowa Test for Basic Skills. It is a norm-referenced test that evaluates students on basic skills and is not aligned with any state or national standards and curriculum. Georgia law mandates that a nationally norm-referenced test, such as the ITBS, be administered annually to students in grades three, five, and eight. The purpose of a norm-referenced test is to obtain information about the performance of Georgia's students and compare it with that of students in a national sample. The results are used for evaluation, decision-making, and instructional improvement and is not used for level or grade placement. The scores are reported in percentiles and show how students compared with other students across the nation. For example, if a percentile score was 66, that school achieved a score that was as high as or higher than 66 percent of the other schools in the nation. There is no studying or test preparation that can be done prior to the test since it is not based on any curriculum that we teach.
